Cream together the butter and sugar on high speed until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes.

Chill the dough at least one hour. Lightly flour a surface and roll out the dough about 3/8" thick for a soft cookie or thinner for a crisp 4th of July cookie..
Place on a parchment lined baking sheet and bake at 400*F for 6-8 minutes. Until the tops are matte and the edges are set. Don't wait for these to turn golden!
