When we saw this recipe on TikTok we knew we had to make our own recipe! Why buy from Trader Joe's when you can make this recipe at home? This cozy recipe hits the spot in ease and flavor. It's a great way to level up Taco Tuesday.
Is this dish spicy? Because this recipe uses sriracha, it has a kick to it. If you are sensitive to spicy foods, we recommend starting with 2 teaspoons and adding a little at a time from there. But if you love that spice, you might want to add 5 teaspoons of sriracha. Be sure to taste each time you add in more.

Ingredients to make Bang Bang Shrimp Tacos
Bang Bang Shrimp Tacos are a fun way to use our homemade Bang Bang sauce. You'll love this bonefish recipe.
- Bang Bang Sauce- This sauce just hits the sauce. Made with rice vinegar, sweet chili sauce, sriracha, and mayo. Our favorite sweet chili sauce is Mae Ploy.
- Bang Bang Shrimp- Make sure to use raw shrimp that is peeled, deveined, and thawed. You will also need cornstarch, salt, and pepper for coating and oil for cooking. The shrimp is cooked in light shrimp and not deep fried.
- Cabbage- For the slaw, you will need green and red cabbage. You can use all green cabbage but the red adds a nice look.
- Garnish- Thinly sliced green onion and cilantro add the perfect garnish and just the right flavor.
- Slaw sauce- Use Greek yogurt or sour cream and mayonnaise for the slaw mixture. The combination of the ingredients gives it a varied texture and taste.
- Flavoring- Add fresh squeezed lime juice, minced garlic, and salt to the slaw mixture for the ultimate flavor boost.

How to make Bang Bang Shrimp Tacos
Bang Bang shrimp tacos are the perfect combo. Learn how to make this easy meal with these step-by-step process photos.
- Begin by making the bang bang sauce by mixing the mayo, sriracha, and rice vinegar in a small bowl. Mix until a smooth and even mixture forms.
- Chop the cabbage, and thinly slice the green onions and cilantro. Add them to the bowl and mix with the prepared slaw mayo mixture. Make sure the vegetables are evenly mixed in the sauce.
- Coat the raw shrimp in the cornstarch and salt and pepper. Cook in hot oil for 2-3 minutes on each side.
- Assemble the tacos on warm corn tortillas. Add the slaw, then the shrimp, and drizzle with the bang bang sauce. Serve immediately.
Hint: Make sure not to overcook the shrimp! You want it to be cooked all the way though but not overcooked where it becomes rubbery.
Fried Shrimp
This recipe isn't deep fried and it still tastes so amazing! If you want to air fry the shrimp you can add the coated shrimp into the air fryer and air fry for 6 minutes at 400°F, shake the basket, and cook for 3-6 more minutes. For more frying instructions, look to our Bang Bang Shrimp recipe and try our bang bang shrimp bowls.
What to serve with Bang Bang Shrimp Tacos
Some of our favorite side dishes to serve with Bang Bang Shrimp tacos are our tasty mango salsa, chips and guacamole, corn salsa, or cilantro lime rice. These are so flavorful you'll want to make it a whole meal with these tasty side dishes.
How to Reheat Bang Bang Shrimp Tacos
This shrimp isn't deep-fried, but still so crispy and delicious! When you reheat the shrimp, to get that crispy texture, add them to the air fryer for a minute. Make sure the shrimp is heated all the way through. You can also reheat them in the microwave, but they will lose that crisp outside.
Top tip
When the slaw and the bang bang sauce sit in the refrigerator, their flavors only deepen. Be sure to make those first! You can even make them a day ahead. Make sure to make the shrimp last so it's hot and fresh on the tacos.

Recipe
Bang Bang Shrimp Tacos
Ingredients
For the Slaw:
- 1 ½ cups green cabbage chopped
- 1 ½ cups red cabbage chopped
- 2 green onions thinly sliced
- ¼ cup cilantro chopped
- ¼ cup Greek yogurt or sour cream
- ¼ cup mayonnaise see note 1 below
- 2 Tablespoons fresh squeezed lime juice about 1 large lime or 2 small
- 1 ½ teaspoons minced garlic
- ½ teaspoon salt
For the Sauce:
- ½ cup mayonnaise See note 2
- ¼ cup sweet Thai chili sauce our favorite is Mae Ploy, but any will work!
- 2-4 teaspoons sriracha see note 3 below.
- 1 teaspoons rice vinegar lime juice works as a great substitution here
- salt optional, to taste
For the Shrimp:
- 1 lb large shrimp thawed, raw, deveined and detailed
- 3 Tablespoons corn starch
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon pepper
- 4 Tablespoons avocado or cooking oil divided
- 12 corn tortillas
Instructions
- We recommend you make the slaw first, followed by the bang bang sauce then the shrimp.
For the Slaw:
- Whisk together the Greek yogurt, mayo, lime juice, garlic and salt. Add the green cabbage, red cabbage, green onions and chopped cilantro and stir to combine. Place covered in the refrigerator. The slaw is fine to be made right before serving, but if you make it an hour or 2 beforehand the flavors have more time to incorporate and it will be more flavorful.
For the Sauce:
- Whisk together mayonnaise, sweet Thai chili sauce, sriracha, rice vinegar and salt. Set aside in the refrigerator until use. This can be made up to 1 month in advance.
For the Shrimp:
- Heat 2 Tablespoons cooking oil (I used avocado) in a large fry pan over medium high heat. Place corn starch, salt and pepper together in a large ziploc bag. Shake to combine. Add shrimp and shake to combine.
- Test to see if the oil is hot enough by dripping in a couple of drops of water. If they sizzle, it's ready. Place half the coated shrimp onto the pan and cook about 2-3 minutes, then flip over and cook until the corn starch is no longer white, the shrimp is pink and reaches 140° F. Remove the shrimp and place it on a paper towel lined plate. Add the rest of the oil, give it a minute to heat up and cook the rest of the shrimp.
Assemble the tacos:
- Warm the tortillas if desired, then place the slaw followed by the shrimp on the tortillas. Drizzle bang bang sauce on top and top with more cilantro and green onions, if desired. Serve immediately and enjoy!
Notes
- Any combination of plain Greek yogurt, sour cream and mayonnaise will work here. You just need ½ cup total.
- Feel free to substitute up to half of the mayo with plain Greek yogurt, if desired.
- If you are sensitive to spicy foods, we recommend starting with 2 teaspoons and adding from there. If you love spice, you might need more like 5 teaspoons sriracha. Just be careful not to get so much you drown out the other flavors.
- We recommend using the Mae Ploy brand of sweet Thai chili sauce, but any will work great!
