Key Ingredients
This makes a tasty berry banana smoothie bowl. This easy recipe is perfect for starting the day.

- Granola: We love our homemade granola recipe! It skips the oil and uses egg white instead, and it tastes amazing.
- Bananas: It's important to use frozen bananas to help get that thick texture. It will also give the smoothie its creamy texture.
- Frozen Fruit- You can choose what frozen fruit you want to use. Make it berry-inspired, mango, or even dragon fruit. Whatever you have on hand or whatever sounds the best!
- Greek Yogurt- We love using Greek yogurt in our smoothies because it's high in protein.
Assembling a Smoothie Bowl
Use these step-by-step instructions as a guide to get the best results. You'll love how simple this recipe is!

- Begin by adding the frozen fruit, yogurt, and milk of choice to a high-speed blender.

- Blend until a smooth mixture is formed. It will be thicker than a normal smoothie.

- Add the smoothie to a bowl. Top with fresh fruits, granola, grains, and seeds.

- Top with your favorite nut butter. Serve and enjoy.
Helpful Hint: Start with less liquid than you think you need. You can always add more, but too much milk will make your smoothie bowl thin instead of thick and scoopable.

Common Mistakes
Adding too much liquid is the biggest reason smoothie bowls turn runny instead of thick. Using fresh fruit instead of frozen fruit can also make the texture thinner and less creamy. We always opt for frozen fruit when blending and fresh fruit for topping.
Top tip
Make smoothie bowl freezer packs ahead of time by combining acai, frozen fruit, and mix-ins into cups or freezer bags. When ready to eat, blend with milk and toppings like granola, Greek yogurt, peanut butter, chocolate, coconut, chia seeds, or fresh fruit for an easy breakfast at home.

How to Make a Smoothie Bowl
Ingredients
For the Smoothie Bowl:
- 1 heaping cup mixed berries frozen
- 1 banana sliced and frozen, see note 1 if you don't want to use bananas
- 3 Tablespoons milk of choice: regular, almond, etc
- ¼ cup plain Greek yogurt optional, but adds good protein
- 1 scoop protein powder optional, I like to use unflavored for this
Toppings:
- ¼ cup granola
- 1 Tablespoon nut butter peanut, almond, sun, etc
- 1 Tablespoon chia seeds or similar such as hemp and flax
- sliced fruit such as bananas, strawberries or mangoes
Instructions
- Place frozen berries, banana, milk, Greek yogurt (if using), and protein powder (if using) inside your blender. Blend on high until well combined, add more milk if needed. Pour into a bowl then top with your favorite toppings!

Notes
- A lot of people don't like to put banana in their smoothies because they find it to be an overpowering flavor. Use about ¾ cup of any another fruit- I highly recommend mangoes because they also add that smooth creaminess.
- These can be made any way you like!! You want about 2 cups of frozen fruit of any kind. You can add cocoa powder, cacao nibs, anything you'd like!

How to Make a Smoothie Bowl Thick
For a thick smoothie bowl, use mostly frozen fruit and very little liquid. Frozen banana, mango, avocado, and Greek yogurt all help create a creamy texture without making it watery. If your smoothie bowl is too thin, add more frozen fruit, chia seeds, oats, or even a few ice cubes to thicken it up.
Remember to add a little liquid at a time. You can always add more, but you can't take it away once it's mixed in!
How to Make a Smoothie Bowl Without Frozen Fruit
If you only have fresh fruit, freeze it for at least a few hours before blending for the best texture. Another great option is ice, frozen yogurt cubes, frozen milk cubes, or frozen bananas to help make the smoothie bowl thicker and colder.
Toppings for Smoothie Bowls
One of the best things about smoothie bowls is that you can top them with whatever sounds good. Try granola, strawberries, blueberries, mango, pineapple, coconut, chia seeds, peanut butter, almond butter, Nutella, chocolate chips, hemp hearts, granola clusters, honey, oats, or even edible flowers for an aesthetic smoothie bowl.
Variations and Substitutions
Here are some of our favorite variations and substitutions:
- Dragon Fruit: Make a dragon fruit or pitaya smoothie bowl by using frozen dragon fruit packets.
- Green Smoothie: For a green smoothie bowl, add spinach, matcha, avocado, or blue spirulina.
- Acai: Use acai for a classic berry smoothie bowl, or make tropical versions with pineapple, mango, coconut, and papaya.
- Fun Variations: Strawberry banana, mixed berry, chocolate peanut butter, pina colada, raspberry, cherry, peach, watermelon, and orange smoothie bowls are all delicious options.
- Without Banana: You can also make this recipe without a banana by swapping in frozen mango for the same creamy texture.
Storing
Smoothie bowls are best enjoyed immediately after blending. If needed, you can freeze leftovers in an airtight container and let them soften slightly before eating. The texture may be different from the original texture.
What to Serve With a Smoothie Bowl
Smoothie bowls are filling enough for breakfast on their own, but they also pair well with toast, oatmeal, eggs, or a simple breakfast sandwich for a bigger meal.
