Ingredients
These cookies are so easy to make and use simple ingredients. Be sure to follow our tips and tricks to have the best baking experience.
- Cake Mix- We used Devil's Food Cake for this recipe. You can use any flavor of chocolate but we really feel like the Devil's Food Cake tastes the most like an OREO.
- Eggs- For the best results use room-temperature eggs. Add your eggs to warm water for 30 minutes prior to baking.
- Oil- Use canola oil, vegetable oil, or even avocado oil for great results.
- Cream cheese- Make sure to soften the cream cheese before but make sure it isn't too soft! The cookies will slide around if the frosting is too runny.
- Butter- Just like the cream cheese you want the butter to be softened so you can mix it, but you not too soft where the cream filling starts to get runny.
- Vanilla- To give a smooth and subtle vanilla flavor to the cream.
- Powdered Sugar- Sweeten up the cream filling with powdered sugar instead of granulated sugar for a smoother effect.

How to make Homemade Oreos
These homemade OREOs are so good and so easy to make. Follow these step by step process photos for the best results.
- Add all of the cookie ingredients to a large mixing bowl.
- Beat cake mixes, oil and eggs together in a mixing bowl on medium speed until well combined. With a cookie scoop, spoon dough balls onto the baking sheet.
- Beat the softened cream cheese and butter together with the powdered sugar. Set in the refrigerator until the cookies are baked and cooled
- Frost the cooled cookies. Place an unfrosted cookie on top of a frosted cookie to make a cookie sandwich.
Hint: Sift the powdered sugar before mixing it with the cream cheese and butter for a smoother filling.
Substitutions and Variations
These are great to make during the holidays! Try these fun variations to make themed homemade OREOs.
- Christmas- Once assembled, roll the filling in crushed candy canes or dye the cream cheese green and red. You can even roll them in Christmas sprinkles.
- Halloween- For a Halloween theme, dye the filling orange or purple. Or roll the filling in Halloween sprinkles.
- Easter- Make these just right for Easter by rolling the filling in spring themed sprinkles or dying the center-filling fun pastel colors.
Learn From Us
The first time I made this, my cream cheese and butter were too soft. The filling ended up being a soupy mess that never really recovered even after sticking it back in the freezer!
Storage
Because of these copycat OREO caksters are made with a cream cheese filling, they need to be refrigerated. They are good for 3-4 days. You can also freeze them for a delicious frozen treat.
Top tip
It's important to soften the cream cheese and butter! When you mix the two together until smooth, the mixture is the perfect texture and will stay that way even when it's stored in the refrigerator.

Recipe
Easy Homemade OREOs
Ingredients
Cookies:
- 30.5 oz Devil's Food cake mix See note 1 below
- 4 eggs
- ¾ cup cooking oil I used avocado
Cream Filling:
- 8 oz cream cheese slightly softened, see note 2
- ½ cup butter slightly softened, see note 2
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- 3 cups powdered sugar
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350° F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Beat cake mixes, oil and eggs together in a mixing bowl on medium speed until well combined. Spoon dough balls onto the baking sheet. This is easiest done with a cookie scoop, I like to use the 1.5 Tablespoon size for these. Bake for 7-10 minutes. Most cookies are done when the tops are matte and the edges are set, but these need to bake a little longer or they are gooey. I like to bake them until they are puffy and an inserted toothpick comes out mostly clean.
- While the cookies cool, make the filling. Beat softened cream cheese and butter together on medium speed until perfectly smooth. Add vanilla and beat to combine. Add the powdered sugar and mix on low until well combined and no lumps remain. Spread the filling generously on the bottom of cookie, then top with another cookie. Enjoy!
Notes
- You can use any chocolate cake mix for these, but the Devil's Food tastes the most like OREOs.
- You don't want the cream cheese and butter at room temperature (unless you're room temperature is in the upper 60s). I recommend getting the butter out about 30 minutes before use and the cream cheese about 40 minutes. For the butter, you want to be able to make an indent on it when you push on it with your finger, but you don't want it to be soft or mushy.
- If your powdered sugar is super lumpy, you may find it helpful to sift the powdered sugar before adding it.
- Don't want so many cookies? Make a half batch without any problems. The measurement for the oil is 6 Tablespoons.
- When adding the filling, I like to make sure my cookies are the same size. They don't work as well when the cookies are different sizes.
- If your filling is too loose, simply place it in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes before using.
