Key Ingredients

A classic, traditional Philly cheesesteak is seasoned with only salt, pepper, and garlic. The little bits of paprika and onion powder add a little "oomph" to this recipe, but are so subtle that it still maintains the integrity of the classic meat seasonings. All of our taste testers agreed it was better with the paprika and onion powder, but all felt like they were subtle enough that you didn't notice them specifically.
How to make Philly Cheesesteak Seasoning
Use these step-by-step instructions as a guide to get the best results. You'll love this easy homemade seasoning.

- Add all of the individual seasonings to a small bowl and mix until evenly mixed.
Helpful Hint: For the most flavorful results, sprinkle onto your meat a couple of hours before cooking. You can even season your shaved steak the night before. This is our favorite way to use it; it also tastes super good if you season your meat just before cooking.

Common Mistakes
Shaved steak is super delicate, and you want to preserve that fine taste. Using too much seasoning can overwhelm the natural flavor it has. Season sparingly so it's not overpowering. It's all about the beef, cheese, onions, and bread, so you want to make sure you enhance the meat, not cover it up.
Top tip
Don't add the seasoning too early when you're cooking the steak immediately. Cook the shaved beef almost all the way through first, then sprinkle the seasoning over the meat and toss everything together so the spices coat the steak without burning.
Recipe

Philly Cheesesteak Seasoning
Ingredients
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 2 teaspoons pepper
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon paprike
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- 2 Tablespoons neutral cooking oil like avocado or vegetable, optional
Instructions
- Combine salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika and onion powder together in a bowl with a spoon.

- If making ahead, mix together the spices with the oil then drizzle over uncooked shaved steak and refrigerate for 2-24 hours before use. Cook as usual.
- To use immediately, cook the meat as directed and sprinkle the seasoning over the meat when it's almost done cooking. Stir to combine and coat evenly and finish cooking.
Notes
- This creates the most flavorful meat when used in a marinade, but it tastes really delicious to use in immediately too.
Variations, Substitutions and Cooking Methods
- Neutral Cooking Oil - Avocado or vegetable oil is optional, but mixing the seasoning with oil creates a simple marinade that coats the meat and gives the spices more time to flavor the steak.
- Chicken-Use this seasoning on shaved beef for a classic cheesesteak, or swap in chicken for a chicken Philly cheesesteak.
- Other meats-It's also delicious on bratwurst, grilled or roasted vegetables, burgers, or other beef recipes.
- Blackstone-For a Blackstone cheesesteak, sprinkle the blend directly over the meat as it cooks, or make the oil-based marinade ahead of time.
Storing
Store the dry seasoning mix in an airtight container in a cool, dry pantry for several months. If you've mixed the seasoning with oil, use it as a marinade for uncooked meat and keep the meat refrigerated until you're ready to cook it.
What to Serve With Philly Cheesesteaks
Use this seasoning to make classic Philly cheesesteaks with shaved beef, sautéed onions, and melted provolone or your favorite cheesesteak cheese. Crispy fries, potato wedges, roasted vegetables, or a simple side salad are also great alongside a cheesesteak.
