What is Steak Seasoning?
When it comes to homemade seasonings, we love using ingredients that are delicious and easy to find! We've got you covered with the best ingredients and easy substitutions if needed!
- Garlic Powder- Garlic is one of our favorite spices to add to savory dishes. It gives such a great flavor, smell, and compliments the other spices.
- Black Pepper- This is the main base of the seasoning. It compliments the richness of the steak and adds a spicy flavor.
- Thyme- Add a balance a flavor with thyme.
- Onion Powder-Giving the seasoning more depth by adding a sweet and mellow onion flavor.
- Smoked Paprika- We love steak seasoning made with paprika! While testing this recipe we found the biggest taste difference was using smoked paprika instead of regular. Adds a smoky and slightly sweet flavor that pairs well with grilled or seared meats.
- Red Pepper Flakes- We didn't want a strong spicy profile but just a pinch of red pepper flakes adds a hint of heat.
- Salt: The salt will enhance the overall flavor of the seasoning while bringing out the natural flavors of the steak. We made sure not to use too much salt so it wasn't overwhelming.

How to make Steak Seasoning
Making this homemade seasoning is easy! Follow these step by sep process photos for the best results.
This recipe couldn't get easier! Simply add all of the spices and herbs into a small bowl.
Blend the ingredients all together until an even mixture forms. Make sure to break up any clumps of spices if any form.
Hint: Make sure the bowl and spoon you use to mix the ingredients is completely dry. If there is any moisture, the seasoning won't mix well, and it won't store well.
Substitutions and Variations
Here are our favorite way to add a little extra flavor and mix things up.
- Butter- Top each steak with a pat of butter after applying seasoning and before cooking.
- Spicy-To make it spicy, add up to 1 teaspoons of red pep flakes.
- Brown sugar- For a sweeter taste add 2 Tablespoons of brown sugar.
- No salt- To make this a salt free seasoning, leave out the salt!
How to serve
This savory steak seasoning is so versatile and can be used for so many cuts of meat. Our personal favorites include sirloin, flank steak, New York, Canadian, prime rib, t-bone, or skirt steak. We also love it on hamburgers, and have even tried it on chicken!
Make your very own Chicago-cut steak right at home with this blend of spices and herbs. You can also use it as a marinade mix by placing your steak in a sealable container or ziplock bag. Make it a dry rub by rubbing the steak with the seasoning the night before and then refrigerating. Or toss 1 tablespoon of seasoning with 1 tablespoon of butter or olive oil and coat the steak. For best flavor let it rest, in the refrigerator, over night.
Storage
Store the blend of spices in an air-tight container in a dry, room-temperature space. Make sure to mix the spices before using so the spices are evenly dispersed and they don't start to clump together. Store up to 4 months.
Top tip
We wanted to add salt to this seasoning but we didn't want it to be too salty. We felt like we struck the perfect balance to enhance the flavor. If you want it a little saltier you can add up to 2 tablespoons of salt.

- This steak seasoning can be used on any cut of beef before grilling, searing or roasting. It was created with beef in mind, but we have also used it on chicken wings and found it to be delicious.
