Kicking off the Christmas season, we have a treat for you. It's a show stopper. White Chocolate Peppermint Puppy Chow (muddy buddies) is a winter spin on the classic peanut butter and chocolate Chex treat. It's a family favorite during the holiday season, and it's so easy to make!

We love giving this to neighbors and making this Christmas puppy chow for parties. It's always a fan favorite.

    Puppy Chow or Muddy Buddies?

So what do you call this delicious Chex treat? Are puppy chow and muddy buddy the same thing? Yes! Both puppy chow and muddy buddy are the same treat. What people call them just depends on where you live in the US.I have heard it called both and often find myself switching between the two names. One things for sure, puppy chow does not mean dog food. Do not feed this delicious puppy chow to your dog!

    Quick and Easy

A lot of times Christmas goodies are delicious, but take forever to make. Not this treat. White Chocolate Peppermint Puppy Chow is so quick to make! It only has four ingredients, is no-bake, and is ready within 15 minutes. What?! You can't go wrong with that!

How to make White Chocolate Peppermint Puppy Chow

Making peppermint puppy chow is easy!

Start by crushing 4-5 candy canes. You should end up with around ½ cup. You can do more or less depending on how much peppermint flavor you want in your puppy chow. Remember if you do too much peppermint, the excess will fall to the bottom of the bowl instead of sticking on the white chocolate and Chex.

Crush the candy cane into tiny bite sized pieces. If there's powder, that's great! It adds to the flavor. Set aside.

Add rice Chex to a large mixing bowl. When making muddy buddies, I prefer using rice Chex over corn Chex for this recipe. I like the light flavor it gives to the puppy chow. In traditional puppy chow, I prefer using corn Chex.

Melt white chocolate melting wafers or chips in a microwave. Make sure to stir every 20-30 seconds so the chocolate doesn't begin to burn.

Pour the melted white chocolate over the rice Chex. Gently fold the chocolate onto the rice Chex with a mixing spoon. Coat the Rice Chex.

Next, pour the crushed candy cane over the chocolate coated Chex. Gently fold the candy cane onto the Chex with a mixing spoon.

Then, pour powder sugar onto the white chocolate, candy cane, rice Chex. Again, gently fold the powder sugar into the mixture.

On a parchment paper lined sheet pan, pour the coated rice Chex evenly on the sheet pan. This helps the Chex set.

    Enjoy this delicious winter treat!

We often double the batch as it goes quickly at my house.

    How to Crush Candy Cane

The best way, i've found, to crush candy cane is to put the unwrapped candy cane in a ziplock bag. A prefer either a quart or gallon size freezer bag because they are lease likely to break. Smash the candy canes with a rolling pin or heavy object until the desired consistency of small pieces and candy cane powder.

Can you freeze puppy chow (muddy buddies)?

YES! How cool is that! If for some reason you don't or can't finish the batch you've made, or you want to save it for later, puppy chow freezes so well. Freeze in an air tight container. Either thaw before enjoying or try a tasty frozen treat!
